Sometimes that happens. There are low-sugar recipes, but also, some people make pumpkin pie less sweet because they do expect it to be served with something sweeter like ice cream or whipped cream. Extra sugar might work. Though in something like pumpkin where the filling needs to set, it may take some fiddling to get the sweetness and texture both right.
