So...

Today is Brunch. Yay! :-D (Haven't been in a while, plus I get to see Junior Crone and - I assume - Invokation. Hurrah! :-)

Have finished Tamora Pierce's Trickster Duology - it was thoroughly enjoyably. I found all the characters quite likable although, I confess, the amount of snarky/light banter was almost Jossverse-like at times and it was, shall we say, a bit startling.
None the less, good books.
Favourite character: Aunt Nuritin.

Nuritin is the Dowager Duchess (more or less) Balitang, and the great-aunt of the Queen mentioned in the second book's title.
Why I like her: Because she's strong willed and doesn't take any guff from anybody, and is NOT the typical Strict Great Aunt figure.
As in: You expect the Silver-Haired, Bossy, White, Noble Woman who Expects her Great-Nieces to Marry According to Duty to be a problem for the Rebel Alliance, and to be loyal to the Evil Empire, and to be totally heartless and fairly stupid in an 'I suspect everyone' sort of way, and all that other stuff.
Hehehe.
Not remotely.
As such: Nuritin rocks my socks.
In my head, she shows up looking rather like this lady (sorry for the awful screen-cap).

Also, I have to say that it's nice to see a young character who is, in point of fact, totally cynical. Not pessimistic, just very, very aware of the human tendency towards self-preservation. It's nice (in, perhaps, a weird way) to meet a heroine who understands the value of knowing how to pick locks and lie very, *very* convincingly.
<*shrug*>
She's terribly refreshing. ;-)

I think I'll have to pick up "Bekka Cooper: Terrier" next. (Why do I suspect she's one of George Cooper's ancestors? Miz Tamora does like to tie her characters together by blood, doesn't she? ;-)

In other news: Last night, I attempted to make a rice dish. It worked, and was pretty good. I think that basmati rice would have worked better than the Thai red rice that I used. Also, I'm feeling vaguely inclined towards eating more tofu. The Gods alone know why. <*shrug*>

I've been having a grand time calculating how much Animal Paul and I (probably) go through in a year. There's a local association of organic & free-range animal farmers who sell their products at slaughter time once a year. I would, eventually, like to get our animal protein supply from this association. I figure, if I'm going to eat them, they ought to have a reasonably pleasant life beforehand, yes? (currently, I'm tending towards "Free From", "Traditionally Raised", and occasionally Halal chicken and turkey, when I can, because it's cheaper than organic!free-range, but is still a step up (I think) from straight-up factory farming. A small step, yes, but it's something.

Anyway, I gotta get on a bus in a couple of minutes, so I shall toodle off for the time being. :-)

With any luck, I'll get some more writing done this afternoon.

Oh: Hyel --> Have you had a chance to look over my Nano novel yet? Anything? (Horrible?)
