Many things.

1) I get to see my friend Amanda on friday. Yay! :-D I haven't seen her in an age and a half. :-) So it will be good to catch up. :-) We're going to have dinner somewhere, most likely in the market, and yack. Or schpiel. Which is all-important. :-)

2) Holly Black (of the Spiderwick series, + Tithe and Valient) is an awesome writer. I like her work. I recommend it. :-)

3) Andrea Dworkin rocks my world (feminist writer, in the anti-porn movement).

4) I don't think that being anti-porn and pro-erotica are mutually exclusive. Erotica is about people who have sex (and sometimes even make love). Porn is about things that get fucked. At least this is how I understand it. When I write sex, I try to write erotica, not porn. I hope I succeed.

5) What is it about hormones that make you horny at the same time as they make you exausted and angry miserable? I mean, from an objective "this is not happening to me" stand-point, this is really neat. But from the stand-point of "this is how I'm actually feeling, actually, right now", it sucks. A lot. :-P

6) The beginnings of characters.
Alex has been on my mind a lot. Alex and Sam.
Let me show you Alex: Alex is seventeen (or maybe just looks seventeen) and skinny as a rail. Alex has the smooth chest of a boy, and the sharp hips and narrow waist of a girl. Alex has earth-brown eyes and the long eyelashes that girls seem to cultivate and boys seem to be born with.
Alex has dark brown hair that is cut short and is sometimes straight and sometimes wavy (as though it were naturally curly, but sometimes straightened). Alex has a face that is somewhere between Keanu and Winona, Kiera and Orlando. The kind of face that could go either way. Alex has a smokey voice that could be called alto, but could just as easily be called counter-tenor, depending on what body is under the clothes. Alex wears ratty black pull-overs that are three sizes too big, and old woolen army-coats with frayed, green linings and wooden buttons. Alex wears bronze cuff-bracelets and sterling-silver knot-work rings. A woman's brooch, -- cheap, made from nickel-plated copper -- shaped like a long-stemmed rose, adorns the lapel of the green coat.
Alex could be a boy or a girl.
Sam doesn't know which.
Sam doesn't care.
Sam dyes her hair raspberry-candy pink and wears third-hand men's tuxedo jackets over tank-tops and jeans and beaten-up army boots. She has about eight rings through her right ear. Six of them are freedom rings (and they stay put) the other two she switches out: Today, one of them is a crescent moon and one of them is a fairy.
Her left ear has three holes in the lobe: One matches the fairy, the other two are steel balls, one purple and one black. She has a long, steel bar-bell cutting through the cartilage of her upper ear in two places.
Sam writes angsty poetry in the margins of her math notebook and laughs at herself for wanting to be writer.
Sam is taking chemistry and algebra because she's good at them, and writer's craft and english lit, and Can-lit, because she wants to be good at them. Sometimes she is, although she tends not to see it. She's been going to school with most of her class-mates since she was in kindergarten.
Alex is an enigma -- that's part of the appeal, I have no doubt -- a dark-eyed mystery drifting down the hallways of a random highschool, a kid who transfered in for grade eleven, after math and gym and most of the graduation-requirements had been filled (in theory) at another school in some other province. Alex plays violin in the school band, struggling through biology, and getting 'A's in writer's craft without even trying.
Sam has a crush on Alex.
I don't know what Alex thinks about this, or if Alex thinks about it at all.
It's a beginning.
