Obviously, the Original Pretty Boy in Makeup is David Bowie. ( don't care that there are eight million other glam rockers and Little Richard to contend with - for me, he takes the prize, no questions asked).
Then there were the gender-fuck boys in pop-metal in the 80s wherein satin and lace and makeup became the ultimate example of hetero-masculinity (Thank you "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" for that excellent tidbit if information).

The Goths, of course, are... well, boys in makeup (and skirts and corsets and long, flowing hair) and girls in top hats and tail-coats (and shaved heads and mohawks and stompy, stompy work boots) for pretty much ever. :-)
It may have got to the point wherein, for example, a goth boi in a skirt isn't necessarily gender-fucking (or maybe he is), but qua gothboi, he's just falling under a broader definition of 'masculine dress'. Maybe. (Thoughts? Anybody? This could be an interesting discussion. Or maybe I'm talking out of my own ear, I dunno. ;-)

Anyway.

I bring this up because, oh look, here's a (small) selection of lovely links to posts about the current ('emo'?) crop of Pretty Boys in Makeup, and how their actions challenge gender norms and relate to ideas about, say, sexuality not being a linear continuum, but something more like a star-burst with a zillion different rays and that one's position in that continuum is not necessarily static.

Notes:
1) You can totally identify as '30% gay' if you've never fucked someone of your own sex. You can be 100% gay if you've never fucked your own sex, just as you can be 100% het if you've never fucked your not-own sex. Sluttiness is not a prerequisite for sexual identity.
I thought we'd figured that out by now. :-P

2) Mmmchelle raises a good point about the mitigating factor in the "What box does Bisexual Person X 'really' belong in" debate: Dick.
Well, no. Thank you. Go, Mmmchelle, for stating just how damn stupid (and mean, hello - since when do one's relationships with women not matter at all? Ew...) this state of affairs is.

3)Also from Mmmchelle: "You can't discriminate against me because I'm a human being, and my emotions, my desires, and my relationships deserve respect for that reason alone."
Yuh. So true (and so applicable across the multi-dimensional board, too!). :-)

Anyway. :-)

Follow the links, and get thinking. :-)

In other (related) news: I want this book: Bisexuality and the Eroticism of Everyday Life by Marjorie Garber.
Can I just say how incredibly nice it is to be able to look at guys and appreciate the traditionally!masculine elements of their appearance.
Like... It's literally been years since I've been able to look at Random-guy-who-is-clearly-stronger-than-me and *not* go "Ack! Ack! Threat!" at some level or other.
And now I find myself ogling noticing guys on, say, the bus and thinking:
Woo... I like the cut of your rippling abdominals jib. :-)

It's *awesome*! Finally! :-D
