So... Most of you know this already, I suspect, but I thought I'd share.

Not too long ago, some SciFi writer I'd never heard of up until now (go figure - I assume this is at least in part because I tend to live at the fantasy end of the spec.fic spectrum) wrote a tirade about queers and how we're E-ville and causing a total decay of morality like-seriously-woah.

Not linking to him.

Linking, instead to:

Cucumberseed's Humourous Rebutal,

AND

Naamah_Darling's Rant on the Subject (which does contain a link to the original tirade),

AND

Tithenai's brief discussion of same.

Irritatingly, I can't figure out how to flag it as hate-speech. I know you click the yellow-flag button in the little blue tool-bar, but I don't know how to change the report-designation from "explicit adult content" to "hate speech". Anyone know how to do that?

In Tangentially-Related News:
You remember that guy who decided to do a mamoth book of the most phenomenal sci-fi EVAR and totally failed to include anyone of colour or any women?

Well, SeeLight has a post up on the subject of how Editorial Work is Hard and how one goes about actually doing one's job. It's really good. Go read it. :-)
VEGAN Double Chocolate BROWNIES (Adapted, slightly, from The Internet):

Ingredients:
• 1/3 cup flour
• 2/3 cup cold water
• 12 oz silken tofu
• 1 cup semi-sweet chocloate chips
• 1 3/4 cups sugar
• 3/4 tsp. salt
• 2 tsp. vanilla
• 1/2 cup margarine
• 3/4 cup good quality unsweetened cocoa powder
• 1 1/2 cups flour
• 3/4 tsp. baking powder

Directions:
1. In a blender puree the tofu, flour and water until smooth. Pour it into a sauce pan, and whisk constantly over low heat until it thickens (it should not boil, if it starts to turn the heat down). This takes about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the chocolate chips, salt, vanilla and sugar. Stir occasionally until the chocolate is melted. Set the mixture aside to cool completely.
2. Preheat your oven to 350.
3. When mixture is cool enough mix in the margarine. (It can take about 20-30 minutes to cool, give it a stir once in a while and stick it in the fridge to make it cool faster).
4. Sift the 1 1/2 cups of flour, the cocoa and the baking powder together. Fold in the tofu mixture until well combined and smooth.
5. Spread evenly in a greased baking pan for 35-40 minutes, or until a knife comes out clean.

SEXUAL ASSAULT - SUPPORT NEEDED

Carleton U. is being sued by the woman who was brutally sexually assaulted
in 2007.
In response, the university states that the victim's injuries
were "caused or contributed to by the Plaintiff through her own
negligence... she was not keeping a proper lookout for her own safety"

1) We urge all community members who believe in women's rights to email
your thoughts to:

President Roseann O'Reilly Runte presidents_office@carleton.ca
Vice President Duncan Watt duncan_watt@carleton.ca
Equity Services equity@carleton.ca

The Coalition for a Carleton Sexual Assault Support Centre is launching a
campaign in response: "Accountability, safety, respect, dignity: We're
Asking For It!"

2) We are organizing an emergency rally for next Monday, Aug. 17th:

A demonstration, organized by Carleton Students and members of the Ottawa
community, is being held to bring attention to Carleton's stance on sexual
assault. Student demonstrators will meet at at 2:30pm in the atrium of the
University Centre
and will head to the CU's administration offices at
3:00pm to present petitions and opposition letters.

We will then march to the Carleton U. Bronson/Sunnyside entrance where we will be joined by members of the larger community for a rally from 4:30-6:00pm.
