Here is where I run into problems.
Or would if I let this sort of thing come out of my mouth:
"I'm tired and cuddly. Who wants to go to bed with me?"
<*headdesk*>
It's *way* too easy to misinterpret that kind of invitation.
<*sigh*>
Oh, well.
In other news: I am now the happy recipient of an Ami Original piece of glass art. :-) It is a mirror framed in blue glass blobs (a bunch of the ones that were scattered on the tables at our wedding) and streaky-pretty blue and white glass. With silver patina. :-)
Once I get some fishing wire, it will hang were the Korean Bears picture currently hangs, between the linen cupboard and the bathroom. The Bear picture may get re-hung over my CPU, or it may sit in my closet for a while. Most likely the latter option.
Things to Do Tomorrow: Get Fishing Wire. Find Wall-Stud. Put screw/nail into wall stud. Hang awesome new mirror. :-)
In still other news: I was on my way home from the grocery store today (made my awesome curried-chicken-and-peaches salad - always a hit ;-) and I began to get to know a character.
The character began as, in fact, a potential hallowe'en costume, and developed into the beginnings of a person.
Her name is Cas (Casandra LaRose), and she's the Chief Engineer - and by that, we mean 'Mechanic' - on the Valeda, a very small, independent merchant starship.
Cas is your somewhat typical Spunky Redhead who grew up in a farm colony on Ceres - one of the Sixth Ring planets in the Epsilon Eridani system - learning to fix tractors and other farm machinery from about the age of ten.
She got the hell out of that backwater the first chance she got. :-)
This is, after all, the girl who - when filling out a job application - wisely chose *not* to put down 'voracious' in answer to the 'sex' question, even though it would have been completely appropriate, even then.
Her Dad's still kicking around but, needless to say, they don't see each other much what with her off gallivanting all over the System with "that rag-tag bunch of hirelings".
The rag-tag bunch of hirelings consists of:
Cap/Kit - That's Captain Katriana (Kit) Cox (who's heard every 'Cox' joke in the System, so don't even bother). There are a very, very few people who are allowed to call her Kitty. Most of them are dead. One of them is her girlfriend.
None of them are you.
No, really.
For all that, she's a good captain who's happy to get familiar (to a point) with her crew, and who doesn't mind bending a few rules now and then.
Or breaking them.
The Cap's been known (though not by many) to do a little light smuggling on the side. She's more than smart enough to keep her crew in the dark about it though. What they don't know won't land them in jail. (At least... that's the idea).
Kit hails from New Aukland, one of the bigger cities on Oshun (a fifth-ring planet that's a good 3/4 water and has a very mild climate despite its distance from the sun).
One person who *does* know about it is Nita.
The Val's First Officer, and the Captains long-time partner. Partner in crime, partner in business and... yeah. The other kind of partner, too.
Got a problem with that? You can try taking it up with Nita, but you'll only get away limping... if you get away at all.
Short, spiky woman. Short, spiky hair. Short, spiky temper. Know what I mean? A chain-smoker who goes for months at a time without a fag (that's the thing about recycled air...), and smokes like a chimney when she's docked.
Doesn't really help with the temper thing.
Sharp sense of humour. Sharper aim. Approach with caution.
Nita's from Gaomei (Fourth Ring: Lots of farms - including solar and wind energy farms - plus a few really huge cities like MacKenzie. MacKenzie's Nita's home town. It's a weird cross between Cairo and New Orleans).
Jinx - What Cas does with the hardware, Jinx does with the software. He's the guy who keeps the nav systems, the radar, and the radios in working (or mostly working) condition. Wears glasses (Surprised? I didn't think so). Tends to babble when he's nervous, which is a lot of the time given that Nita scares the hell out of him and he's got a huge crush on Cas (who may or may not ever return that affection. She doesn't right now, at any rate. But that could change). But he knows his stuff when it comes to computers.
Jinx came from Lagos - A third ring planet with a thick Terraformed atmosphere to protect the population from the heat of the sun.
Del - Pilot. Likes to do tricks. Bit of a joker. (Bit of an understatement). Does not know when to shut up. (Hah. Nita gave him a black eye once - only once, the boy can learn - over that).
Wants to make his rep as a pilot doing 'dangerous cargo' runs before shipping off to some fleet or other. Possibly the *only* crew-member who wants to join a corporate interest.
Del's from one of the big cities on Terra Secunda (the first (human-)colonized planet in the Epsilon Eridani system -- It's located in the fourth planetary ring of the system), but he ended up settled on Andromeda - another fourth Ring planet - in order to be with his fiancee.
Everyone else avoids the Corps like the plague they are, but he's got his reasons, I'm sure.
I don't quite have him figured out yet.
And then there's me. Maggie. (That is: Doctor Laurence, Marguerite Sita, but only on official documents of which there are as few as possible).
If Jinx handles the software, and Cas handles the hardware... I'm dealing with the wetware. mostly it's damage control. Patching up welding-torch burns and setting wrenched shoulders. Sometimes it's handing out vaccines and booster shots.
Lately, it's been more than that.
a lot more.
What with Corporate trying to shoot the little guys out of the sky, and, well... the other thing.
I heard the Cap snapping at Del the other day, reminding him that the Val is not the Millenium Falcon, and I thought, "Yeah, Belinda, and you're not Han Solo... Except that I know what you've got in that hold down there..."
Intrigued?
I hope so.
I know *I* want to find out what happens next. :-)
