While killing time at work last Saturday (it was *really* quiet) I decided to work on a theory, which runs as follows:

Santa is probably something of a minor deity by now. :-)

How so?

1) He reprisents stuff that is associated with Gods (e.g. the three big Chinese Gods that were mentioned in that "Long Search" program on the BBC eight-million years ago):
- Prosperity (obviously well-fed and hauling around a big ol' bag of material wealth),
- Longevity (he's old), and:
- Posterity (sort of. It's the association with children in gemerally that I'm pinning this on, even if they aren't his own kids).

2) People leave out offerings for him.

3) He does the judgement thing (sort of like Karma or the Abrahamic god)

4) People (granted, mostly little tiny kids) Believe in him (that's kind of the klincher right there, isn't it. ;-)

5) Oh, yes: Supernatural being who is vaguely omniscient.

6) Also, he can get down a central gas-pipe like its a very wide tube-slide. (Although that's not so much to do with divinity, I don't think. :-)

Anyway, that's my thought. :-)
