So.

I've been charged by a friend of mine to find Activities for a young lesbian taking one of her courses.
'Cause apparently I have a Total In with the queer grrl scene in Ottawa.
(When did that happen??)

But, in the interests of helping this rather shy gal out, I figured I'd cast my net on the waters of the Internet and see what came up.

Dyke events happening over the summer (not including pride)? Anyone? Beuler? :-)

So Far:

Clubs and restaurants:

Swizzles (which does Karaoke and sometimes hosts the Dusty Owl reading series) on Queen Street
This is also where LIX (Lesbian Information Exchange) meets every month, although that’s actually a networking get-together for bi/dyke entrepreneurs and most of the regulars are over 40.

The Mercury Lounge – woman-owned and queer-friendly, though not specifically a queer-bar.

The Lookout – In the market, on York Street. Kind of a no-brainer

Helsinki – also kind of a no-brainer.

The Shanghai – home of China Doll’s Karaoke night on Saturdays. (This is in China Town, on Sommerset right between Bronson and Percy). The food is yummy (though not if you’re allergic to peanuts, fyi) and the atmosphere is a lot of fun.

The Buzz – This is on Bank Street, just a few blocks north of Gladstone (not far from the Herb and Spice, I think). They’ve host Naughty Thoughts Book Club (a queer reading series) a few times.

Centertown Pub (Somerset, *just* east of Bank) has Sunday T-dances, but they may be guy-specific. (Phone and check? 613-594-0233).

“A Certain Sort” is a seasonal queer-gals-and-pals dance/lounge. There should be one happening this summer (maybe at the Shanghai? That’s where the spring one was). The proceeds go to the Venus Envy bursary fund, so you can probably get more information by popping in there.  (Venus Envy – the women-positive sex store on Lisgar, just east of Bank – is a good place to check for local events as they have a wall full of event posters right by the door).

Queer Women Ottawa has a facebook group and plans regular meetups (I think)

Of course, there’s my event: Voices of Venus. This is not specifically queer, but we seem to get a fair few queer gals out every month. It’s a women’s spoken word show. The first half is an open mic (bring stuff to read! If you do, you get in for free! ;-) The second half is a performance by a feature artist from the local community.
This is our facebook group:

For Your Own Interest (maybe)  This Wednesday:
Nairne Holtz reads from her new collection of stories, This One’s Going to Last Forever (Insomniac Press). Populated with characters familiar to Canada’s lesbian communities, This One’s Going to Last Forever is at turns sexy, butch, punky, reflective and spooky. With Gabriella Goliger and Marcus McCann.
Wednesday, June 17, 8pm. Venus Envy, 320 Lisgar.
