Last night was AWESOME! :-D
The open mic sheet filled right up (and we didn't have to cajole people into getting their courage up, or anything. People just showed up wanting to read!!!) and there were a couple of people who were first-time readers (one of them - Fadhiya - performed a piece about freedom and inspiration and it made me cry. Among other people. WAH!) and there were a couple of old hats (like meeee), there was a little bit of music (Hex and Deliriumfae did a song together, and I sang Summertime, and a gal named... Chris? turned up to sing something as well) and a lot of poetry.
Jessica Ruano's set was short but very good. I quite enjoyed the "You don't fuck with a poet" piece. It made me grin. :-D
The Open Mic List:
1) Nadine (Adorkable Thespian)
2) Me
3) Janika
4) None of the Above (Hex and DeliriumFae)
5) Chris
6) Alisa
7) Fadhiya
8) Jill Anne
9) Hodan Ibrahim (Who's going to be our Feature for October!!!)
Rawk! :-D
Anyway, for those who missed, you missed an AWESOME show -- the place was packed and everyone had a good time! :-D (Some folks were asking after my girlfriend, wondering if she'd gone back to the states. I think it's nice that they ask about her).
Jessica made Haiku Magnets which were for sale by donation (I got two, which shall adorn my fridge shortly). I different take on magnetic poetry, I think. ;-)
Random thing I discovered: Four gigs (provided you are getting the gig-space for free) a week, at $5 a head cover-charge with 30 paying attendees showing up every night? Is a living wage.
Who knew? :-D
And, yeah, yeah, I know. Getting that kind of performance draw 16 days a month, every month, without incuring extensive travel expences? Is next to impossible. At least in a small city like Ottawa. But it's good to know that one could, conceivably, boost one's monthly income at least a little bit by doing a show like this.
I mean, think about it, if we can get 60 full-paying attendees out to every VoV? Each of our features takes home a good $150 for an evening's 30-60 minute performance. Which is way more than I typically make in an eight-hour day at the office.
So I think that's fucking *awesome*!
Anyway. If you missed out last night, you really did miss out on a phenominal show. Here's hoping you'll all be able to make it out next month (August 11th) when we have the illustrious Danielle Gregoire performing.
Adorkable Thespian had this to say about the evening! :-D
<*runs off to squee some more*>
- TTFN,
- Amazon. :-)
P.S.: Random Funny (From JuniorCrone, I think): I'm in an Open Relationship with the Lord. Fun with poly -- polytheism, that is. ;-)
- TTFN,
- Me. :-)
