Call to the Dance
Prelude: The Intro (from The Book. I may need to re-work it, given the changing of the story, but it might still work).
Ordinary Life:
Sam is a grade 12 student at Lisgar Collegiate Institute, coping with the usual trials of trying to spread her wings and fly the nest of an over-protective mother, while also dealing with the fact that her parents are divorced and still fighting (and that her father had an affair with the woman he is currently dating, before the divorce papers ever got served). She misses dancing, which she used to do, but had to stop after the horrible car accident that broke her legs, and completely ruined the joints of her right leg.
Call to Adventure:
This could, in theory, be the Tarot Reading – particularly if I threw in The Gunny Lady (High Priestess?) as a card instead of the The Lovers. Or something. I think that would work. Especially if The HPs is drawn to look a bit like the Gunny Lady (when she’s healthy, that is). This would make Lisa the Herald. Hm.
I could also throw in a handy dream sequence about the Gunny Lady – elaborating on the slow, erratic heartbeat that she heard in her dream about The Book – being sick/scattered/etc.
Refusal of the Call:
This would be Sam’s refusal to take the reading seriously, and her constant “Oh, come on”-ing to Lisa over what she suggests might be in her future.
Perhaps I could throw in a brief, after-work scene (such as her on the #5 bus, getting off at Glouster and Elgin – or where-ever – and walking to her Dad’s place) – she could be mulling over the tarot reading, and thinking about how it’s so dumb, and then, while walking home, she could pass a group of fairies. Earth folk, possibly looking like Yo-yo guys and gals, hanging outside a Tim Horton’s (or something), and realize that they’re something different entirely. This would introduce Sam’s Secret a day or so earlier (but that’s a good thing), and would give her something to go “I’m so not seeing this!” about before she gets to the house, thus being in denial (sort of) and Refusing the Call in another way.
Crossing the Threshold:
I think this would be meeting Alex.
Alex isn’t the Mentor, Alex is the Love Interest.
But, Alex is also a fairy and, as such, will end up Drawing Sam further into the fairy-awareness that she already has.
Plus, Alex is intersexed and, therefore, possessing of the natural liminality that is appropriate to a Threshold Guardian.
Meeting the Mentor:
Okay, see, I think this might be Alex’s meetings with Fox. Because Fox is definitely a Mentor figure. Without a doubt. But Sam doesn’t ever meet him.
So I’m not sure how well this works.
But it might be okay.
So let’s roll with it, for now, and see where we get.
Also, The Gunny Lady might Qualify as… What? The DiD? Something like that. Especially if she’s showing up in Sam’s dreams.
Tests:
Dealing with Alex’s fairy-ness
Accepting the Challenge of Carrying the Book
Refusing to give the Book to Sinkley
Allies: Alex, The Gunny Lady (sort of).
Enemies: That would be Sinkley (the Ambivalent/Shapeshifter character), as well as Celia and Greylocks.
Approaching the Final Test:
This would be the bit between Alex giving Sam the bone necklace, and Sam following the pull of the Book to where Alex is lying, dying.
The Ordeal:
This would be the Change (I think) – as in: The blood soaking into the Book, and Sam reading it, and, thus, becoming the fulcrum of the Balance.
The Reward:
She gets to heal Alex and, thus, have hir back again.
The Road Back:
Returning the Finger Bone to the Gunny Lady, and healing her.
Perhaps (or not) Sinkley could be dealt with here as well? (I dunno…)
Helping to get her Mom on the road to healing herself.
Returning Across the Threshold:
This would, I think, be Alex sneaking in the window, and Sam’s Mom totally not knowing that s/he’s there.
Return to Ordinary Life, Having Been Changed:
This is Sam’s waking up the next morning, with her alarm clock blaring another song about dancing, and having Alex beside her in her very normal, human bed.
Postlude: The words from the Book (sort of) about how the Dance goes on.
Question: Who is The Trickster in this story? If there is one...
