Well, I just finished The Deathly Hallows.
Okay...
1) I liked the end.
I don't mean the epilogue (although that was acceptable), I mean last chapter before that. That was okay.
2) I am so not surprised about Severus having a Thing for Lily. No-Brainer? Yeah... (Still don't know what she saw in James, but oh well...)
3) Quotation of Note: "Of course this is happening inside your head, but why on earth would that mean it is not real?"
Words to that effect, anyway. :-)
I liked that bit. :-)
4) Not My Daughter.
:-D
Good for you, Molly! :-D
5) I can't help feeling slightly annoyed with the Threesome, at least a little bit. Yes, they were camping out in really dangerous circumstances, but: Hello: They're able to carry their furnished, heated apartment in a clutch purse. Stop whining about How Hard This Is. :-P
Also: Wild Mushroom Stew when the person collecting the mushrooms doesn't really know what she's doing? Not the smartest idea. Found that a bit hard to swallow.
(Haha... Swallow... Right, moving on...)
6) Stuff I didn't like:
Her use of long (long) excerpts from books, news papers, and deliberately over-heard conversations in order to move the story along and hand over big chunks of exposition.
Um...
Shoddy, I though. Or sloppy.
I recognize that there was a lot of information that had to turn up, and when you're holed up in a forest for an age and a half with no way of learning anything new, there are only so many ways an author can convey information to the characters.
But still.
It would have been nice if she'd come up with a less... heavy-handed, I guess? A less heavy-handed way of doing it.
Sadly - other than dropping extra information into earlier books (rather difficult to do at this point) - I can't think of any suggestions off-hand for how to fix this. :-(
7) I felt sort of... Odd... about Tonks and Remus. It's like their dying was almost like an after-thought. Like, "Oh, wait, Moody wasn't enough! More casualties need to be added to the heap!" Which, while true, seems a little bit of a let-down in that they just... turned up dead. There was no explanation of *how* they died. It seemed too random for such central characters. I mean, Colin Creevy turning up dead? Whatever. Fred actually *getting* a death scene? Fine and dandy (if a bit sad). But Remus and Tonks? Why? What, exactly, was the point? :-)
8) Those code-names everyone was using on 'Potterwatch'? Could have been a bit less obvious, don't you think? I mean, really. I mean why not call Kinsley 'Butterfly' and at least have a couple of steps before you get to the translation? Y'know?
Despite the little part of me that "Whee! I guessed right!", mostly this is kind of an eye-roll for me.
<*sigh*>
9) Yay for Neville. :-) And him teaching Herbology. And Neville's gran. :-D Yay! :-D
Conclusion: Acceptable book, acceptable ending to the series, even if all I'm doing about it is whining. :-)
This afternoon:
Grocery Shopping
Followed by: Book Shopping and Happy Hour w/ Ami! :-D
Yay! :-D
Off to write more Trin/Switch (Part Thirteen is having some difficulty getting started. Blast it.)
- TTFN,
- Amazon. :-)
